VFW Unmet Needs Program Tops $6 Million in Aid
Program succeeds in meeting the ‘Unmet Needs’ of military families
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (November 4, 2016) – The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. is proud to announce that its Unmet Needs program has now exceeded $6 million in financial assistance grants that have so far supported more than 4,000 military service members and their families.
The Unmet Needs program has been able to greatly expand its coverage since it was first created in 2004 as an alternative to the individual military service relief societies, who provide primarily loans that have to be repaid, and who may deny the loans if the member doesn’t have enough time in service remaining to pay it back. Today’s Unmet Needs program, thanks largely to the generous contributions of individuals and corporate sponsors like BURGER KING ® franchisees, now awards up to $5,000 and eligibility includes both active duty military and veterans.
Unmet Needs most recently awarded nearly $25,000 to support nine student veterans who were impacted by the closing of more than 100 ITT Technical Institute locations nationwide.
“The VFW takes great pride in knowing our Unmet Needs program continues to provide a hand up for so many military families, especially during an already trying time in their lives,” said VFW National Commander Brian Duffy. “This program truly exhibits what we do and have always done to support and serve America’s service members, veterans and their families.”
Service members, veterans and their family members are now able to submit the Unmet Needs application online. To learn more about the program, visit www.vfw.org/UnmetNeeds.
