VA Claims and Separation Benefits
Navigating the system of benefits provided by the VA can be confusing and complicated. When a veteran needs to file for disability compensation, access training programs or other benefits, the VFW National Veterans Service (NVS) offers guidance and advocacy, and their services are free of charge to any veteran (not only VFW members).
VFW Veterans Service Officers (VSOs) are accredited experts trained in all facets of veteran benefits. Service Officers are qualified to assist in filing for the following:
- Disability compensation
- Rehabilitation
- Education programs
- Pension payments
- Death benefits
- Employment assistance
- Training programs
Additionally, VSOs may request hearings and present oral arguments before the VA and the Board of Appeals as needed. VSOs are available to veterans seeking assistance with the claims process and will provide their services every step of the way.
Pre-Discharge
VFW Pre-Discharge representatives assist separating and retiring active-duty military through the process of claiming their VA benefits and entitlements. Established in 2001, the VFW Pre-Discharge Program seeks to ensure a smooth transition upon discharge. VFW Pre-Discharge offices are located across the United States near or on major military installations. Those within 180 days of discharge may contact a representative to begin the process.
For more information about NVS or to locate VSOs and/or Pre-Discharge services, refer to VFW National Veterans Service.

Auxiliaries in Action
Members of the Tom Wolfe Memorial VFW Post 4207 and its Auxiliary, located in Monett, Missouri, participated in the 2nd Annual Carol McGregor Memorial Motorcycle Run & Benefit. Proceeds raised were donated to the Open Hands Kitchen and the Heartland Canines for Veterans. During the event, the Auxiliary President and Post Quartermaster provided information regarding VSOs to those in attendance. They were able to assist at least five veterans and/or family members with names and phone numbers of VSOs who may be able to assist in either filing claims or to follow up on current health situations.
