Texas VFW Post Earns National Award
Sinton Post 12160 rallies support to community after two hurricanes
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (July 20, 2018) – The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. is proud to announce that Cpl. Mark R. Goyet Memorial VFW Post 12160 in Sinton, Texas, will receive the prestigious VFW Fred C. Hall Memorial Outstanding Post Special Project Award in honor of its Hurricanes Harvey and Irma Relief project.
The VFW’s Fred C. Hall award recognizes VFW Posts, county councils, districts and state departments for unique and outstanding community service projects.
VFW Post 12160 is being recognized for the dedication and support its members provided to their community in the aftermath of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma in 2017. Sinton is about 25 miles northwest of Corpus Christi.
According to their award recommendation, Post 12160 converted their building into a storage and distribution site to provide food and other necessities to the local community of less than 6,000 residents. They also served hot meals to some 2,500 people a day when flood waters prevented access to county emergency shelters. Post members, many of whom were impacted themselves, generously donated their time and money to help others who lost everything to start rebuilding.
“During times of crisis, it is the kindness, support and tireless work like that of the members of VFW Post 12160 which truly showcases the impact the VFW has in communities around the world,” said VFW National Commander Keith Harman. “The Post’s dedication and resiliency truly embodies the VFW’s mission of service to others.”
Representatives from the Post will be honored at the 119th VFW National Convention in Kansas City, Mo., July 21-25, and presented with a $10,000 service scholarship for future community projects.
