Let’s Make Their Dreams Come True!
Goal #1: Student Participation
- Use social media to get the word out
- Hang posters in schools and libraries
- Present the information at PTO’s/youth clubs/civic organizations
- School open houses
Goal #2: Recipient Recognition
- Host an awards luncheon or dinner
- Media press releases
- Honor at school awards ceremonies
Goal #3: Community Awareness – Educate the public on what we do!
- Family Freedom Festival
The two ideas listed below were submitted by Marian Belaire from the Department of Michigan:
- Set up booths at local festivals, farmers markets, car shows, etc.
- Have scholarships information on bulletin boards at your hairdresser, grocery stores, and anywhere you can.
Goal #4: Increasing Awards (National Young American Creative Patriotic Art Donations)
- Host an art and wine night
- Host a craft show
- Raffle a handmade item such as a quilt
Scholarships (Complete information available at vfwauxiliary.org)
- Applicant must be one of the following: Current VFW Auxiliary Member, Spouse of current VFW Auxiliary Member, or child of current VFW Auxiliary Member that is 18 years of age or older.
- Qualifying member must have been a member of the VFW Auxiliary for one (1) year prior to submission of application.
- Four $1,000 scholarships will be awarded each year, one in each of the four VFW Auxiliary Conferences.
Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest
- Open to students in grades 9-12
- The first-place winner from each Department (state) competes for national awards totaling $29,500.
- Digital art, photography and jewelry are NOT ACCEPTED.
- Two-dimensional art must be on canvas or paper. Water color, pencil, pastel, charcoal, tempera, crayon, acrylic, pen, ink, oil, marker or other media taught may be used.
- Three dimensional art can be paper, papier-mâché, pottery, clay, metal work, etc.
- Open to students in grades 6-8
- The national first-place winner wins $5,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. and each first-place Department (state) winner receiving a minimum of $500 at the national level.
- Students write a 300-400 word essay expressing their views based on a patriotic theme. This year’s theme is “Why I Honor the American Flag.”
- Open to students in grades 9-12
- The national first-place winner receives a $30,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school.
- Other national scholarships range from $1,000-$16,000, and the first-place winner from each VFW Department (state) wins a minimum scholarship of $1,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.
- Students record their reading of their essay to an audio CD or flash drive. The recording can be no shorter than three minutes and no longer than five minutes (plus or minus five seconds). This year’s theme is “Why My Vote Matters.”
