Your Contacts Are Already Made, Pay Attention to Deadlines!
Summer is over; all the kids are back in school. Now is the time to follow-up with the contacts you have made in your schools and community organizations. Remind teachers, students and parents that some deadlines have changed slightly and are fast approaching.
- 2017-2018 Theme – “American History: Our Hope for the Future”
- Grades 9-12
- Student entry must be received at the VFW Post by October 31, 2017
- The first-place national winner receives $30,000

- 2017-2018 theme – “America’s Gift to My Generation”
- Grades 6-8
- Student entry must be received at the VFW Post by October 31, 2017
- The first-place national winner receives $5,000

- Applicant must be 18 years or older and a current VFW Auxiliary member, or the spouse, son or daughter of a current Auxiliary member
- Application deadline to National Headquarters is February 15, 2018
- Four $1,000 scholarships will be awarded, one in each of the four VFW Auxiliary Conferences

Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest
- Grades 9-12; Maximum student age of 18 at time of local entry
- Student must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national
- Student entry must be received at the Local VFW Auxiliary by March 31, 2018
- The first-place Department winners compete for national awards totaling $21,000

Work with your Post and continue to promote all four scholarships.
- Remember to always have a contact point and/or person for all scholarship contests.
- Post all scholarship contest information on VFW and Auxiliary websites – Post, District and Department levels.
- Post information about the contests on social media – Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, etc.
- Hang posters and fliers at locations middle school and high school students frequent.
- Submit an article or press release describing rules, deadlines and awards to your local paper. Fillable press releases are available on the Programs & Publicity Resources page of the VFW Auxiliary website.
- Follow up with publicity of Post/Auxiliary, District and Department-level winners.

Make sure applications are completed neatly and in entirety before advancing them to the next competition level. We don’t want an scholarship applicant to be disqualified because the application wasn’t completed.
