Lois Callahan
2015-2016 National Legislative Ambassador
Throughout the year, I have been encouraging you to explore the VFW and VFW Auxiliary websites, to learn about the Legislative Program, the VFW Priority Goals and increase your participation in the legislative process. You have embraced this program and your efforts have not gone unnoticed.
Your phone calls, emails, letters and visits with local and national legislators really have made a difference. In fact, the VFW website lists many legislative victories for America’s veterans. Below is 2015 summary; a complete list dating from 1917 to the present can be seen here or under the VFW in D.C. tab, “National Legislative Service.”
2015
- Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans (SAV) Act
- Eliminated 1% COLA reduction penalty on future military retirees
- Created government match to military Thrift Savings Plan accounts
As you can see, much has been accomplished. But, there is so much more to be done. Many of you have recently contacted your legislators regarding issues such as:
Your consistent and continued contact will help to push these issues and bills through the House and Senate to become laws. I hope you will make it a habit to contact your local and national legislators regularly throughout the years to come. If you haven’t yet done so, take a minute and sign up for Action Corps, the VFW’s national grassroots advocacy network.
Continue to make your voice heard, never stop advocating for America’s active-duty military, our veterans and their families. Together, we have and will continue to make a positive difference in the lives of all Americans.
