What is a hashtag?
This has been a popular question since we unveiled the #AuxiliaryPatriotism hashtag as part of this year’s Americanism Program. First things first, we start with a definition.
Hashtags are referred to as the pound sign or the number symbol (#). They are used to sort and categorize content or posts on social media sites (e.g., Twitter, Facebook or Instagram). A hashtag begins with the pound sign followed by a keyword or phrase intended to be used for describing a topic or theme. For example, if someone was interested in learning more about the VFW Auxiliary, they can perform a search using the hashtags #VFWAuxiliary, #AuxiliarySWAP or #AuxiliariesInAction. The more precise the search, the more content and information one will discover and learn more about the subject.
How do you use a hashtag?
The idea is intended to help promote the Americanism Program using technology. If you have never done one before, not to worry as it is super easy! You simply place the pound sign at the beginning of a word or phrase with no spaces. #SuperEasy! That is it, you are hashtagging! If you use a smartphone, mobile device, laptop or a computer, you can do it. Using hashtags makes it easier to find things you post and share online.
How will this promote the Americanism Program?
For the past 18 months, we have learned to embrace technology when meeting together was either limited or restricted. We had to find creative ways to not only promote this Program through unique methods, but also work using technology to promote all of the Auxiliary Programs. Are you looking to grow your Auxiliary membership? How about demonstrating patriotic unity through community connections? What are you doing across all levels of the organization to showcase the red, white and blue? Consider a tweet, post, picture or video using the hashtag #AuxiliaryPatriotism. The goal is to overload online platforms with various ways members are promoting patriotism in their Auxiliaries and throughout the nation. Refer to the National Program Book for a selection of ideas and search online for social media posts who have already communicated the hashtag #AuxiliaryPatriotism. Let’s see all the ways we are promoting Americanism every day!
